keywords in URL separated with a hyphen

Am I right in saying that keywords separated with a hyphen in a domain name will get you higher in the SE's, assuming that everything else was equal? i.e. would example-widgets.com do better in the SE's than examplewidgets.com?

Doesnt mean squat. Don't confuse highlighting with actual ranking.

I'd say it helps. Because most of the people will choose "Example widget" instead of "examplewidget" as linktext, which is very important these days.
