Microsoft was busy covering up an almighty cock-up last night after forgetting to renew its hotmail.co.uk domain name.
It's about as high a profile domain cock-up as you'll see, but not the first time MS has failed to renew a pretty critical domain.
There's a simple lesson for all of us - renew your domains in plenty of time. For .UK domains as in this case, renewal notices are sent to the organisation's contact address as shown on the WHOIS record - keep the record up-to date and don't ignore the renewal notices (and the 'pending deactivation' notices sent later) sent through the post by Nominet.

I've no doubt MS would have recovered the domain anyway, but it could've been fun in the meantime.:)
Was it actually used by UK people or just registered
I'd never noticed moltar - most likely just registered.

We've got email stacked up on our servers addresses to hotmail.co.uk and to msn.co.uk email addresses.
It's a painful, annoying and potentially very costly thing to happen. Anything that reminds people of the importance of renewal is good in my book, hence the post.
