Re-using old IP addresses

Could a search engine mistakenly penalise you?

I just found out the IP address for my site was being used for another site a couple of years ago. The old site was cancelled and taken down ages ago but the DNS for the other site was never removed - so the old domain name still points to my site.

My host is correcting this right now.

Could this ever be a search engine problem e.g. if your site has the old IP address of a bad site?

We have seen Inktomi ban entire class C's. So the answer is yes, this could be an issue if the site that previously used this IP was flagged for one reason or another.

Ditto Rosco - it is more common that you'd think. I'd ask the host who was on the ip before.

Regarding INK and the banning of class C's. Has anyone ever seen domains comming back once you assign a new class C? Is it the class C that is banned, or do they flag the class C and then ban the domain itself?

Is there any way of knowing if an IP has bad karma (ie a problem when it had a different domain name)?

It's not just the searchengines that ban IP's.

1. Different Countries - China, Saudi Arabia......

2. Filtering software (like the ones used in some libraries)

3. Isp's

My company is having a hard time finding an Isp with IP's unless they have a lot of adult clients. Apparently they grabbed them in the begining and are reisuing them now, getting new IP's is becoming very difficult.

And no I wouldn't use an IP that formely hosted Adult sites.
