Some one is sitting on my brick & mortar biz name. The name is registered with Register.com and shows expiration of 9/7/2003. but I can't register it. Do I have to wait? How long?

Thanks,
Ross

You might contact their customer service to see what the hold up is, some registrars will 'hold' domains after they expire for a certain period.

Alternatively, if you want to be ensured the best shot at buying it, you could consider contacting the previous owner of the domain, or registering with one of the domain grabbing services to see if you can get it that way.

Expired domains enter a "redemption period" once they expire which allows for the registrant to re-register the domain in case they have forgotten or something like that. Our domain accidentally expired and we were told we had entered a "redemption Period" where we could renew the domain but it would cost us about 150 dollars. We didn't want to pay that so we waited until the redemption period had expired and then re-purchased the domain name at regular price. The redemption period is between 30 and 40 days from when the name expires...

Am I paranoid? I was in the same situation, but feared if I contacted the owner he would reregister and the price would go way up.

I unfortunately didn't know about godaddy. I checked whois almost every day for a couple of months. The domain expired end of May. It came available early August, the 10th I think, about 70 days later.

Some registrars must have different redemption periods. You'd think this would be written down somewhere, but I couldn't find it. I queried registrars, but received back formulaic gibberish.

Go to NameBully.com or Snapnames.com

good luck.. they are both good but Namebully.com is cheaper

Once the name expires, the domain owner will have 1-45 days to renew it with the current registrar.

Then the name is put into Redemption Period, which lasts 30 days. During this time, the domain owner can still renew the domain, but at a much higher price to save it from deletion.

After 30 days in redemption, it enters pending delete where it sits for 6 days before dropping and becoming available for reregistration.
