At 11am New Zealand time, geek.nz went live.

The case for geek.nz : [dnc.org.nz...]

The announcement :
[dnc.org.nz...]

Cheapest place to get them : [iserve.co.nz...]

One interesting thing about geek.nz, is it will use geeky stuff : IPv6 and DNSSEC.

*smacks forehead* ya know... as much as I refer to myself as 'The Resident Geek' at work.... I'm having a hard time feeling much national pride at this brilliant new marketing idea.

The logic behind the creation of this new domain is about the sappiest thing I've ever heard. People can't express themselves on a .com? Actually...come to think of it...how about giving all the .coms in NZ to me? Just sign them right over to my name! I'm more than happy to help fight this evil oppression! :D

I am a Kiwi (even if I am currently living in the USA), and as much as I hate to say this - this is almost as ridiculous as the FART tax!

When I read the story about it, I had to check a couple of times to make sure it wasn't an April Fool's Joke. I know my share of NZ geeks (and others of different nationalities) but I don't know that they'd be rushing out to buy a domain name that proclaims this to the world :)

I have a .geek.nz and am proud of it :P Sure it's a gimmack, and probably a fairly lame one, but it appears to be sucessful. I know quite a few others with them and have had several people envious of mine. But then I also have a teeshirt with GEEk written across the front :)

As for .com's, I don't like them for NZ based stuff. It really grates with me when a local company has one instead of a .co.nz. Why not be proud of where you are? It's a good branding tool. Naturally this only applies to companies selling locally.
