I apologize for such a basic question but I'm really clueless about using multiple domain names (yes I have done a search on this forum and wasn't able to resolve the issue). My client has several domain names registered, one is the main branding name and the others are for write ins. This is the first time I have dealt with names and I'm realizing that I no nothing about domain names in general so I'm kind of in the dark as to how to point them to one site. What exactly is it that the domain name points to? An IP address? If so does this mean each name should be configured to point to the same IP address? I know registrars usually allow you configure you DNS but thats just the server computer, not the actual directory of the individual site, right? Again please forgive my ignorance, if there is a basic FAQ somewhere that answers these questions please point me to it!

You need to set all the domains to set to the same ip or name server, you also need to add the appropriate domains to the host header in IIS or equiv under Apache etc

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Admin Tools > Internet Information Services

Right click on the appropriate website (you'll need to open several tabs to drop a list)

Select properties, Under the website tab you'll see Website Identification. Click the advanced button, then add

Enter the url and the port number (80) and select Ok (or whatever) and there you go

You'll need to enter www.domain.com and also domain.com if you want both versions to work

There is a better way!

The purpose of pwning multiple domain names in mosts cases is to capture more traffic. In some cases a domain registrar will allow you to a forward a domain name to another url, and either mask it or not (meaning the new doamin shows in the url) The main problem with this solution is you do not have any keywords or web page titles to submit to the search engines.

www.mydomain.com lets you mask forward domains with meta tags for free
