Industry sources have confirmed that Shopping.co.uk has been sold for an undisclosed 6 figure sum.

The domain has been acquired by the Shopping.net network, owners of other super names such as Mortgages.net and Information.net

The domain name is pointing to Shopping.net which is basically a shopping destination served up by Espotting PPC results, and is quite a major provider of PPC traffic for Espotting.

There was some form of ownership problem with this domain, and up until yesterday, Nominet had it in suspend mode whilst legal checks were being carried out.

A 6 figure sum - I am *very* surprised that it went for so much!

I dont think I would ever type that in if I want to shop online. If it was a brand name or a certain type of product I could understand but on its own I think its useless.

Yeah i would find it a very hard name when it comes to branding, would still be suprised if it went for the previous sum though. Nice find Shak, king of the .co.uk :)

To me that suggests that the parent domain names are doing sufficiently well that a six-figure sum to buy the .co.uk name was a worthwhile investment.

If you have the money to cover all the bases, no matter the perceived loss, why not?

Mad Missions dressed up as a drag queen, hanging round Domain Lawyers and Nominet HQ.

Oh the joy of Nominet and Centralnic. The only thing I like about ringing nominet is the on hold music..!

Do you not find that dialling the Nominet number (or at least the 33221 bit) sounds like the Scooby-Doo cartoon theme?...no?...just me then.:(

Mental note to self - get out more.

the .uk domain name field has been increasing quite a lot recently as far as I can tell.

I think companys are slowly getting to grips with the fact that .com's are not always the best way to go.

Every domain I own (7) are all .co.uk's and I own 1 .net on the basis the .com wasnt available.

The reason I wanted the .com? I have lots of little companys and I wanted a main wesite to collate them all.

"Shak do you go on mad missions to find this stuff or do you just get bored and "surf"...!"

I seriously doubt whether Shak has time to even think about being bored. As unquestionably the Number 1 player in the UK domain market he knows everyone who is anybody. Major players who normally don't bother talk to others on the phone seek out Shak to ask his wise advice and get second opinions on major deals. There is hardly anything that happens of note that Shak has not had a hand in or has provided advice on. Quite simply, he has his finger on the pulse of the UK domain scene. And that heartbeat is beating very strongly indeed.
