Placing a one div at the top, bottom, left and right of a cell?

I am trying to update an old HTML website with CSS. The old site uses a table with background images that make it look like the page is floating or shadowed.

I thought I would do this by placing 4 divs within another cell or div that is centered.

Can I do this?

How can I place one div on the top edge, one div on the right edge, one div on the left edge and one on the botton edge of a cell or other div?
