I see this doesn't work in IE, but I am not sure how to do something similar in CSS. I am limited with what I know about CSS. Is there something similar that will work with all browsers. I am trying to set the max width of something without requiring it to be set to that width if say image/text entered is smaller.

We may need a little clarification. From what I can guess it sounds like you are trying to set a container to fit to the width (or is it height) of an object, but not letting it extend past certain boundries.

Is that it?

Yes, that is what I am trying to do, but I think I found a way around it though using javascript.
