Setting Minimum height

is there any way to set the minimum hight for a left div cell. My right expands due to text but the left wont expand to meet the requirments of the background with out a bunch of spacers in the html code. I also want to ensure that the right side wont float under it.

You should use the floats with negative margins method.

You might want to take a look at this Microsoft document in regards to this issue. Using height depends on the version of the browser.
