Hey guys, it's been a very long time since I've touched HTML/CSS but I'm moving back in that direction. I need to build an online portfolio, and was wondering which method is more usable in December 2016. For instance, would a grid layout even hold up across browsers? Should I rely on the old float and absolute positioning techniques from years ago? What say you?

Thanks,
ARNK

Hello arnk and Welcome to WebmasterWorld forums [webmasterworld.com]

The old float and absolute positioning has lost a lot of its appeal due to the increasing focus on mobile friendly site design. If you need to build different versions of your content to look good on different devices, it just becomes easier to work with flexible sizing.

A lot of sites went with bootstrap to manage their conversion, the bootstrap grid is still popular and now moving towards adding FlexBox features. There was a short discussion a few weeks ago with links to more information: [webmasterworld.com...]

Hi there arnk,
If you want to avoid "code boat" and non-semantic mark-up,
then I would suggest that you avoid "Bootstrap" in particular
and frameworks in general like the plague. :(
