SELECT element transparency

Dear all,

I have been asked by a client to modify a form field so that it is transparent. By adding 'background: transparent' to an INPUT of type text, it works and is transparent. However, not in <SELECT ...

Please let me know if this is possible, and if so, how?

You can change the background color, but not make it transparent...

I don't know, none of these work on a Mac.
