CSS Sprites and HTML tables

Guys, send me into the right direction, please.

HTML page with a table. Vertical list of images with 5 columns of parameters. Images are in the left column, all the same fixed width. This I presume can be done with CSS sprites to load 1 image instead of 30+. HOW? Can someone send me to a tutorial?

Constraints:
1. Not mounts of code, I don't want to spend hours poking at it, have very limited time frame, the page is low ROI but was recommended by Google to be modified with Sprites.

2. Pages are pure old HTML tables. nothing fancy, very little CSS and obviously no CSS tables. So this should be simple enough to plug in.

I've used CSS sprite generator to build CSS and sprite image. Just can't figure out how to make it work with HTML tables.
