My external css style sheet validates. However, when I submitted a page for css validation with XML Editor I get an error message "java.lang.Exception: Unknown file"
What does this mean? Do I need to fix something?

I think the problem is with your XML Editor and not your CSS file. I suggest you submit a bug report to XML Editor's developer.
