I added a css link menu into the right column, still fine IE6 & NN then I get to Opera, which not only want's to move it(menu) up the page so overlapping the header area, but also then puts the text following the menu down into the footer area? I don't have a clear:both declaration in the menu links (I'm using display:block), so why..
If this sounds like a ramble, then just ignore it, I sometimes think better when "typing" out loud!
but otherwise if any one can help
I'll try to condense code into an example unless I break computer first!

Put your problem page up on the web somewhere and put a link to it in your profile so that people can examine your code.
What you want does not sound too difficult so do not dispair.
I decided best to leave the problem and come back to it this morning with fresh head? and yes I agree it shouldn't have been diffcult and in fact it was simply a case of adding a float: right to the right content panel...
it means I have to surround any further text after the menu in a clear:both div, but I can live with that
I'll put a link in profile soon as this particular site should be up and running very soon
