container div not resizing with internal divs

Hi,

I am having a problem getting a container div to extend in height with the content of two divs that are inside it. The two internal divs are floated right and left inside the container div, and I think this is causing the problem as when I clear the floats the container div DOES extend (i.e., its background color goes all the way down the page), but clearing the floats messes up the layouts, obviously.

Height:auto is not working.
