Problem with the height of a div

Hello, I have made a web with a typical div structure :
header
Container (and inside the container 3 div's: left, content1, content2).

I have define the height of the container div like this:
min-height:600px;
height:auto;

In order to get tis adaptative regarding the height of the others divs..
but it does'nt work. When oNe of the insides divs has an height superior than 600px the container div does'nt get adapattive...
