I was validating my site [XHTML transitional], when HTMLHelp popped this one out:

* Line 80, character 60:

... not offer pre-packaged deals – every customer has
^

Error: illegal character number 150

Exactly WHAT Is legal about using a hyphen? :(

Is it a genuine hyphen, or one of those pasted-in-content-from-Microsoft-Word characters that looks like a hyphen but is actually something with a much higher ascii value?

Try overtyping it manually in a plain text editor (such as Notepad) with a genuine hyphen.

It's probably an em or en dash inserted automatically. As suggested, backspace over it and retype it (as long as you're not in Word with auto-everything turned on).
