Hover / Visited States no working

When a user clicks on a certain text; it replaces the image on the screen.

I've assigned the text a value of "#" in order to assign it the appropriate javascript;
However, the a:link ¦ a:hover ¦ a:visited states are not taking into affect?

Any reason why?

If you remove the javascript and leave the text # linked, do the "a:link ¦ a:hover ¦ a:visited states" work then?

This wil tell whether the applied css styles are working or if there is some interaction when the javascript is applied.
