Hi,

Let's say for instance that I was a painter and wanted to showcase my paintings on a page. How many examples should I show on each page.?

Let's also say that i wanted to describe the paintings , not just give a picture, how many examples would you do/

I'm worried that having only one example on each page is not a good idea. Because if the customer doesn't like that particular painting, he won't buy.

But, if I put one more than one painting, the page will appear very long

Two would be fine, what you should do is have one big image of the picture and a smaller one, which they can click on to see it in large.

Most retailers solve this problem by including thumbnail photos and very short descriptions on one page, and letting the visitor click on the thumbnail to explode the view into a larger picture, perhaps with an enhanced description.

It's definitely a good idea to display multiple options to the visitor - paging through items one-by-one is tedious and discouraging, particularly with a slower connection.

Let's say though instead of a painter, I am a writer and want to give some examples of my writing

Would you still say two examples per page?

If you're talking about writing samples I think the concept of presenting short summaries, and then linking to the full example could work, analogous to having an index with thumbs of art work and linking to larger images.

Of course, this all depends on the length of your writing, if they are short poems, like a haiku, then it might be better to display them in full, with two per page, but not if they are actual articles (let's say over 100 words long) or similar documents.

Placing two full example articles on one page would probably be too much all at once. In that case I think it would be better just to display the first paragraphs of each and link to the full article in other pages.

It would depend on the targeted keywords. On the main page if you are looking for SE traffic then you need text to bring your site up in the SE's.

Let's say you have about 6 different samples, I would try to put part of each example on the main page. Then a link that goes to a page with the full example. One page per example/one page per targeted keyword.

I'm a copywriter, and on my web site I have a portfolio page, as do most copywriters. I have different categories (direct mail, brochures, web content, etc.) Under each category, I have links to several samples. Most links will open up a new browser screen and show the sample in PDF format. The web copy samples open up a new screen and take the prospect directly to the web page I wrote for the client. If you just google on key phrases like "freelance copywriter" or something similar, you'll see plenty of examples of what I'm talking about.
