I probably wouldn't have found this site because they aren't hotlinking to my images, but they did hotlink to a gif file and I found a lot of 403s in my log file.
Because of the way the site is designed and the limited products (only one in my niche), I think it is a direct attempt to get my site penalized. I could be wrong, but my mind is racing with conspiracy theories right now :(
Can someone point me in the right direction to find the IP and hosting service for a subdomain on a co.uk site?
To identify the domain owner, searching Google for "uk whois" will give you some sites to use. Similarly, googling "reverse ip lookup" will let you track down the host.
You might also check Stolen Content - What to do First [webmasterworld.com] in the library here.
If the firm is substantial, you may have a case under UK law that might result in a financial settlement in addition to removal. Of course, 99% of content thieves won't be asset-rich firms with reputations to protect. Good luck!
This subdomain is hosted on what I think is one of the largest uk providers. Searching around on their site, I found a link to "User's Web Sites" and discovered some similarily named subdomain sites using the uk host name followed by a number. However, this particular subdomain wasn't listed.
None of the whois sites were able to come up with anything by typing in subdomain.domain.co.uk, so, I gave up trying to find the owner and sent off an email to the co.uk host yesterday morning. I included the pages that were infringing and a list of all my pages from which content was taken.
The Good News: today all my images are blocked on their site (they are still there in the source code). :) Looks like they blocked their entire image directory since a few images that were not mine are also empty.
The Bad News: The major portion of the site text content (which is exact copies from 34 of my pages) is still up. :(
So, I sent off another email to the host thanking them for blocking my images so quickly, but pointing out, again, that the content was also copied.
The site isn't listed in G or any other engine, so either it is new, a personal site or some other webmaster found copied content and reported them already.
The rest of the bad news ... Decided to look around some more and found two other sites using my images and/or content. :( :(
Thanks sunroomguy, but that whois didn't work for a subdoman either.
