1) If I find a newspaper article that would be of interest to my visitors, can I simply cut and paste it into my site, giving the proper credit at the bottom of the article on my site? Or should I have that article open up into a new window (the paper's own?) If I am giving proper credit as described, do I need to ask formal permission before using the articles?
2) I want to describe product on my site. Above each description I want to add a photo of the product(s). Is it acceptable to cut and paste a photo from elsewhere so long as I credit the photographer? If the site I take the photo from is not the photographer's, do I have to credit both the site and photographer? Do I have to get permission up front?
Thank you for giving me guidance. I want to be proper about this but I would (obviously) rather save time by just quickly pasting this info into my site rather than having to wait for formal permission from a bunch of different people.
Yes.
> Is it acceptable to cut and paste a photo from elsewhere so long as I credit the photographer?
No.
>If the site I take the photo from is not the photographer's, do I have to credit both the site and photographer?
Depending on the site's contract, you may have to get approval from them.
>Do I have to get permission up front?
Yes.
2) You need permission for displaying copyrighted photo. Now my question is, what about thumbnails with proper credit? Can thumbnail be regarded as "quoting", or do I need permission for it as well?
