I have a site called "word1word2.com". I would like to make sure this name is protected in case someone else decides to use it. Do I need to trademark it? Or copyright it? What are my options?

Put the "TM" on the name/logo and copyright the contents. These take no futher action other than putting the notices on your site. You can do them immediately.

If you are really concerned about it, you can register your trademark with the US Patent and Trademark Office (assuming you are in the US). This takes a little bit of time and costs a few hundred dollars.
