Copyright questions

I am in the process of building a site that hosts links to humorous media. For example, a site like albinoblacksheep.com or ebaumsworld.com. However, I, like they, have once needed content to fully start up. I have figured out that my attempt (linking directly to their media from my site) is illegal, and that I will have to hold the media locally....however, the media on the two sites mentioned above does overlap, while both sites have copyright notices at the bottom of their respective pages. Albinoblacksheep.com also has such favorites as WEEEE (gonads and strife) and peanut-butter jelly time, which is copyrighted from another site...

So the big question is, how did they get all this content, and how can I do it as well to get my site up and running, and if possible, is there a site somewhere that talks of media copyrights?

Thanks for all your help

If they have the content legally, then I would assume that they either created it or that they paid the owner a fee to use it, or they got permission to use it for free.
