Being the star of your own show is the next challenge

But, are you willing to go public?

Hi, webmasters

I've been creating content since 1998, my stuff has been included on books, magazines, and even on TV. Everything started as a hobby/passion, with no interest on earning money (except my first project, involving the promotion and sales of my photographs, nothing else).

Yet, I have chosen to remain anonymous, only on very rare times I had to face exposing my name, or brand, why? because I don't like to be a public image, and I don't consider myself a good salesman of "myself". Besides, I worked for several years at a big media company where I was promoted to traveling editor, and things got complicated, anyway... I don't exactly like the pubic eye.

↑ This remains to me, as one of my questionable decisions, because in the big picture, it's a good idea to build a brand, or to promote your name. Like many of you around here, I moved away from working for a company and decided to go solo, things have worked pretty well for me, but there are times when I know having a strong public image-brand-name (I mean, me, my name), would have provided better results. Yeah, I still prefer to remain low profile.

That's a bit of context. Anyway...

Back in the day, Google tried to promote Google Plus (+), I hated it, but then I read one of their goals was to focus more on the authors, and somehow centralize authorship to deal with relevancy and copyright. I still hated it, but something in my head said "that sounds like something", and only later I began to understand it's true potential.

Now, I rarely produce new content, I'm not motivated, and I have felt the hit of content thieves. My content has been stolen several times, and what hurts me the most is seeing how they go to great lengths to steal my images and take credit, or just refuse to provide a free credit, because I would be happy to cooperate. I'm old enough to understand some problems mean opportunities, but I don't want to get involved on working with other people, "collaborations", or trying to turn their content stealing into a business, no thanks, this may sounds like something to newbies, but like something else to oldies. Like many around here, I just want to be left alone :)

But read again, many of us have been hit by content thieves, and... at the end of the day, who are you? pretty much a nobody, someone unknown, and that makes you vulnerable... it makes US vulnerable. Even if you are not Tom Scott, producing your own videos, or just jumping from text to video puts you on the map.

I created this thread here: [webmasterworld.com...]

But I believe people failed to see the point, or I failed to paint it properly.

- We became protagonists in the web dev world
- Then protagonists in the content creating world (text)
- Now it seems video is the new trend here to stay... and we are not part of it

I have experience producing video, but I have absolutely no interest on appearing on camera.

* What about you?
* Are you too "retired" to do it?
* Do you just... lack interest?

My reply? If I wanted to do video I'd have been doing video for the last ten years. (youtube pays better than adsense)

Reality? My stage presence is as a musician with over fifty years professional experience. Being in the public eye is not a problem, but my expertise is fraught with ALL KINDS OF COPYRIGHT problems even if I play it myself and not a recording. The other stuff I have knowledge and expertise is NOT video related, heck, it's barely in the realm of documentary research and that makes poor video (think of a university lecture and powerpoint slides).

I'm not camera shy, I attend cons (where my other web published interest lay) and glad hand/speak. Willing to be interviewed by local radio and tv... but that's just icing on the cake. The website (passion site) was never about me, money or legacy---sharing love with those inflicted with the same gentle madness or simple curiosity. That's where I fit on the web.
