Privacy Statment

Obtaining a clear and precise privacy statment.

I need a Privacy Statement for a site to indicate basic info, such as; email addresses won't be sold; use of cookies and so on...
Should I beg, borrow or steal one? Is there people out there being sued over taking other site's privacy statment?
Also, does anyone know of sites out there that help in structuring privacy statements?

Just be concise about what information you obtain and what you do with it

I put something along the lines of "we do not distribute any information obtained to third parties" and "no personal information is collected by this site"

You dont have to be a legal eagle. Another thing best to add is a disclaimer about the info on your site, ie errors and omissions in case someone causes a stir about it

Hi. You might want to try Truste or The Online Privacy Alliance. They have a lot of resources for making privacy statements and I think they have a privacy policy template that you can use.

The only problem i have is that I think privacy policies should be as simple as possible, as clear as possible, and theirs aren't.

My favourite place for help in structuring privacy statements is the W3C Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P) Project [w3.org].

It's helpful even if you don't want to implement a P3P policy. If your site use cookies I recommend that you implement a P3P policy including a Compact Policy in order to please visitors using MSIE 6.0. ;)
