Old Content

We have a customer who we have just completed a new web design. We are building out pages every month for SEO purposes.

Some of the content is old/older. Meaning they provided articles a few years old and it is not "current".

We are using wordpress

Your opinion, should we add the articles and content regardless of age? Certainly is we do we can "back date' the posts so that they appear in chronological order when showing all content.

Common sense tells me to add the content regardless. My main common sense point is that if you took an old site with old blog posts and created a newly designed site you wouldn't want to start blogging all over again right? Another common sense thought was "how could it hurt"?

What are your thoughts.

Hi Maggio and welcome to the Forums. If your concern is primarily about the SEO aspect of this older content, you may be better served in the forum related to the aspects of SEO: [webmasterworld.com...]

If it is a matter of should I use old articles in place of starting with all new content, I don't see why not. If there are parts of the articles that are less useful because of their age, maybe think about updated versions in place of old content.

Wait! Do not put this on your site; it's not a real meta ;) But I have been wishing lately that there were such a thing: a way to tell search engines that this page's content and/or formatting will not change. Not everything that's old is stale.

My belief is that even old but on-topic content still helps affect your quality score and authority. Aged quality content is a good thing IMO.

While not ignoring SEO, that should never be the first place to start. As for "old" content there's nothing wrong with that. Go to your local library for as many illustrations of that as they have books on the shelves. :)

What MIGHT happen with old content on a new website is (not likely, but possible) a duplicate content issue, particularly if it first appeared under a different domain. That said, if you created it, no mater how long ago, or how many other domains, it is still yours.
