journalists all copy each others stories, but to do so without any extra research and just doing a straight copy is a little insane

A Pulitzer prize winner should know better, and I am certain she does know better. But, to think you can get by with it is another story.
If I were an Editor I would much rather have a reporter come to me and say she will miss a deadline rather than plagiarize material.
