My first post here at Webmasterworld so thank you in advance for your time and consideration. I'm working on a project for someone that involves their web site and pdf documents. Specifically, we've created some pdf's that are downloadable as a handy reference guide for visitors but we are worried about duplicating some of the content from the web site itself. Although the material on the pdf will not be EXACTLY the same, it will be an extension of the information available on the web site and will include some of the same material. In researching this topic, I've come across some conflicting info so that is why I am tapping the expertise here. Again, thank you all in advance for your guidance.

Offering printable, RSS, and PDF versions is not penalized by Google. On the contrary, Google seems to like it when you offer multiple avenues for accessing your content. Sites with printable versions and RSS feeds do better than those without. Google doesn't want you just copying from someone else or filling up your site with minor variations to make it look like you have more than you do. Having some PDF digests or complements should not harm your search engine standing.

Boil it down to this rule of thumb:
Are you providing another method of access the data or just replicating it?

That's the line between punished duplicate content and rewarded duplicate content. Does that make sense?
