adding to existing content or modifiing creates duplicate content issues?

Some of my pages at the moment contain 200-300 words and as a result seem to have been dropped from certain search engines. Therefore I need to add content to beef them up to 500-600 words a page.

Should I start fresh with completely new content or is it possible to add or modify the existing content by beefing it up a little? I want to avoid duplicate content issue at all costs! The present content on the pages are not copies and have been online for 4 years and previously had PR. Cheers.

i dont see how adding content to existing pages would result in duplicate content as long as the content you are adding is not being copied from elsewhere.

I don't think you want new content. Your idea to just beef up what you have sounds good to me. Maybe it just needs a refresh/update?

In any case, it'd be interesting to hear what you decide, and how it works out.
