Web Content Writing--staff writers v. freelancers

The hiring of staff writers: who does it, how often, and is it supportable?

Hi. What do you think is the breakdown of sites, particularly start-ups, that use freelance writers for occasional content vs. more permanent staff writers who can create the "nuts and bolts" of their website? Is the market dominated by freelance writers, or is there room for/value in writers joining the team, rather than being occasional contractors?

If there's a place for staff writers, what sorts of sites use them? How do the writers and webmasters find each other?

If it's for a regular, full-time job, then most likely the company's own web site, Craigslist, and/or any number of employment sites like Monster, Career Builder, etc.
