This is not a question as much as a comment.

Some designs are either too garish or too subtle. I can guess why a website design is too obnoxious or garish. The web designer doesn't have the skills or the website owner (who is probably the designer as well) doesn't know.

But, why is it that so many websites with otherwise good design are trying to impress by "i am too subtle" approach?
What do I mean by that? Very small font in a shade of gray or other color over a non-white background that makes it very difficult to read.

I say that the web designer who designed doesn't really lack skills but just going with the current fad. Because, the website is OK or even great if not for just this particular obsession with being too subtle.

Not everyone uses a desktop computer to browse the web. There are still people who still use laptops/notebooks with power save mode. This makes it difficult to follow.

What are your thoughts?

P.S.: Before you ask, I would say, I have tried switching to a desktop just to read and the websites that use this approach aren't as easy to read either. Overriding the site's css is a hassle.
