is it illegal to make a website about eg. "Ford Cars" and then have the actual specs about all the ford cars ?

To my knowledge, factual information is not copyrightable; only the particular presentation of that information can be subject to copyright.

Note, however, that you may want to make clear that your site is not affiliated with nor approved by the Ford Company in any manner. And since specifications may be regarded as being proprietary information, you may want to run this whole project past your solicitor.

stapel is right. you could add statement in your site that you are not affliated with ford and explain what is your website all about. :)
