Isn't it a thought for debate?
At times it happens that we come across people who are against our conventional wisdom. We start doubting their intentions and take them for something more then they are portraying. We do our best to coerce them and mould them into a person that our psyche approves off.
It does not ever cross our mind to understand and give it a thought as to why they are the way they are. More so, even if we do try to know them on a deeper level, we are afraid we might go against the perception of the majority.
The other side of the story....
Being different is not something we should have inhibitions about.
One should always have the courage to speak their mind out or stand up for themselves. We should take heart from the fact that all leaders were not born but were made into one because of the fact they were different from others. It was this fact that allowed them to create a niche for themselves and outshine people around them.
So, if you also think you are different, then don't be afraid and just follow your heart. Keep faith in your abilities and let the perception that you have about yourself be the only guiding light in your life.
Being different is not something we should have inhibitions about.
My favorite insight about being different, one that altered my perceptions at a very young age, was from a Frank Zappa live album. He announces to the audience, "Good to see you all came in your uniforms. If you don't think you're wearing a uniform, you're kidding yourself."
Imagine a crowd of teen - hippie - "free thinkers," all thinking they are different. In being different, they've simply aligned themselves with a new type of group.
Inevitably self perception, and perception of the outside world, is always colored by the fragile human ego. Get past this, and the differences you see in people melt away. We're all the same, it's only thinking we are different that makes us different.
