Since this is my first post here, I should probably give a brief explanation of what I do. On my website, I sell a line of products. These are things a lot of other people sell. My pricing is about mid-range and I offer better guarantees than most.

A lot of sites have the bare minimum (and sometimes it's the absolute bare minimum) description of the items. For an ABC Widget, they might just have size and very basic features.

And, in fact, a lot of those sites look alike because they either just copy the descriptions right from the manufacturer's literature or have a web site that's hosted by the manufacturer. (The manufacturer offers web hosting service that provides shopping cart and all. Great for building a web site, but it also means that everyone's web site looks very similar.)

On my site, I do it all myself. And, I provide more detail and content with the items. I believe it's a result of that that I am getting better and better rankings with the search engines, especially Google. I know places like Google like to give their web visitors quality results, so I am assuming I may be getting better rankings because I'm giving more information about the products, or ideas how to use them, than the standard "cookie-cutter" web site.

Depending on the particular product, I'm getting conversion rates from 0.9% to 2.5% up to 5.3%. I'd like to increase them all, of course, but I'm most interested in upping the lower numbers.

The "problem" is that the product page getting a 0.9% conversion rate is ranked #1 in Google. So, I would like to increase that conversion rate without jeopardizing the #1 ranking.

How should I go about dissecting my page to determine why Google ranks it #1 so that I can maintain that text or those features, while at the same time rewriting the text to improve my conversion rate?

Thanks,
Dan

Welcome to WebmasterWorld [webmasterworld.com]

Here's a really insightful thread from Brett about how to achieve a successful site in Google. [webmasterworld.com]

If you read, and re-read that thread and the links it will open your eyes to why some of your pages are doing better. There are some other factors, of course, but if you read and understand the content of that thread I think you'll have the answers.

Good work on creating something different from everything else - keep it up.

Thanks for the pointer to that post.

I guess I've been doing a lot of things right for the search engines, particularly Google, without knowing I was doing so.

I thought I was just doing good site design. ;-)
