I want to file a copyright for one of my sites. Godaddy offers an online service for about $10. Has anyone tried it? Or do you have any other services like it to recommend?

For $10, I'd say it's probably worth trying out. :)

Go forth, be a guinea pig, and report back and let us know how it worked!

I saw that too, when I registered a domain name recently, so I think it is a fairly new service.

When I looked at it, it seems you pay $9.95 to GoDaddy (or their copyrighting business partner) but then you also must pay $30 when you file.

But I do like the image you can use on your site once it is complete. I have major problems with copyright infringers, so it is probably worth the $40 just to get that image to display on my site :)

It also says it copyrights source code, which I found interesting.

It doesn't say if it is for an entire website, or if you must file for each page, and it seems you cannot access the FAQ until you pay that first $9.95

From their terms page for that GoDaddy c-site thing, it almost looks as though all they do is send you the filled-out form which you have to mail to the US Copyright office yourself.

On the other hand, registering copyright yourself is easy. If you have to mail all the stuff in yourself anyway, why not just cut out the middle man? There's a link to the US Copyright office in the "Charter" link for this forum. Registering stuff with the copyright office pretty much consists of A) fill out the form, B) slap your content onto a CD, C) print out a few representative pages (see "deposit requirements"), and D) mail it in with your check for $30.00.

Now, if they would fill everything out and mail it in for you, I'd pay for that. :-)

Thanks for the tip about the CDs, Jollyk. I didn't realize I could file myself via CD. When I'd filed before, I had made a printed copy of my web site, which took a lot of paper.

Oh ... you may need to print out a representative sample. Just read up on the US Copyright website -- they have some pretty decent instructions. Good luck! :-)
