What is considered a reasonably successful conversion ratio

traffic to sales conversion ratio - minimum successful range

Notwithstanding the "that depends" factor... in general if somebody has some information to offer on the web that has a valid USP that distinguishes it from the rest of a given market, what percentage range of sales to traffic is considered to be a minimum successful range?

I've heard some "web marketing gurus" say 1% to 3% is a successful site.

I'd like to know what you good folk think and why.

Many thanks!
Jack

PS: I'm looking to hire a contract web copywriter that can deliver the target conversion ratio or better.

Whom do you recommend or how do I find someone with a proven track record and not get burned?

Hi Jack, (never use this greeting in a airport!)

The gurus have it about right 1% to 3%. If it was GREAT content
it of course could run higher!...KF

Thanks very much for the confirm, KF...

Do you have any suggestions on how I might go about locating a copywriter with a solid track record that can deliver that kind of conversion?

There are great suggestions here for writing copy, but I need to stick to my knitting and do what I do best, which is teaching people the skill I offer at the site. I want to hire somebody on contract who's already good at what _they_ do.

I have a site with info that a lot of people want, provided it's presented in a credible way that motivates them to try it out. I offer a money back guarantee, no time limit. I've had _very_ little buyer's remorse in many years... just want to get the conversion up.

I just got a nice upgrade on the design - it's helping increase the stickiness of the site some (from 89% exit at home page to 74%) but more'd be nice and the conversion hasn't come up yet.

I think I saw somewhere here that posting site url's is not welcome (did I understand that correctly?) but I'd be to happy to stickymail the url to you or anyone interested in taking a look. Suggestions are quite welcome.

Thanks again!
Jack

Correction, just checked Friday's stats and only 45% are exiting at our newly-designed home page. That is very good news.

Now we're seriously looking for that Conversion King or Queen to help the visitors become happily involved...

Best regards,
Jack

There is probably no full proof way to check this, but there are definitely some steps you can take to insure you are tipping the odds in your favor. Ask for solid results from other people they have done work for and then ask to talk to those people directly and call them.

Now being a copywriter myself I have offer the other side of the argument as well, which is to say that most copywriters, good or not, may not get it right the first time. A good copywriter will, however, know how to test his copy and change it to achieve better results. As long as the copy is getting better and conversions are going up you probably have a good copywriter.
