Content Writing for Sitemaps

We have been updating our website's sitemap from time to time. The process we follow is to add links to all the new pages (mostly the important ones) as well as new articles etc using the page title as the title of the link. Is that the way to do it?

I had read somewhere that 1 sitemap should not have more than 100 links. After reaching that 100 links level, what should be the next step?

Should there be a new page called sitemap-1.htm that we should now be working on? If yes, how should it be linked to the old one and is it sufficient to link it from the home page?

maybe you could have a main sitemap page, which just lists the catagories. and then you could have seperate sitemaps for each catagory.
so your main sitemap might have links to
-- mammals
-- birds
-- reptiles
-- fish
-- dinosaurs

and then your mammals category page would have a load of links to all your pages with mammals on.

this has another advantage because you can then link straight to the mammals catagory page from your individual mammal pages, rather than the main sitemap. which might help your users.

That definitely sounds like a good idea but do I need to link the additional sitemap pages with the rest of the website to get any real value? As of now, my main sitemap is linked from all the pages on my website.
