I would like to use an image that is on wikipedia and covered by the GFDL license.
The image would be used alongside an article that I have written about that subject.

What action do I need to take to comply with that license and Secondly, will this affect the copyright that I hold for the rest of the content of the webpage?

Wikipedia has pages with details of exactly how the license works.

If it's their picture, they may grant you a license, but you will not 'own' the picture, or be able to pass it to others, unless they, too, follow the terms of the license.

Also be careful; some WikiP images are NOT theirs, and you will need to go to the source to get a license to use it.

The image that I'm interested in is distributed under the GFDL, which states:
"A "Modified Version" of the Document means any work containing the Document or a portion of it, either copied verbatim, or with modifications and/or translated into another language."

If I include this image in my webpage, does that mean that my webpage must also fall under the conditions of the GFDL and therefore be freely copyable?

No.

The terms apply to the image only, unless you choose to have them apply to your page.

Thanks, that's cleared that up for me.
