copyright on karaoke style uploads

We're interested in allowing members to upload recordings of themselves playing in-copyright material, for example doing a karaoke song etc. Does anyone know whether most karoke sites are legit in respect of copyright? Is there some way of handling this kind of material in copyright law?

Don't forget that there will probably be performing rights issues over the backing track as well as the copyright on tune and lyrics.
