Enforcing Copyright - AdSense Sites

Someone very helpfully posted a link to Copyscape. After five minutes checking I'm not best pleased to find my content being plagiarised in various places around the internet. Most of it's fairly innocuous: blog entries, personal sites, things like that; some of it isn't.

For example, there's an informational site made up entirely of stolen content with AdSense slapped all over it. Some of the content is mine, but most of it is from other people; the site covers a lot of ground. Legal action is out of the question of course (very little damage has been done, to me at least), but it would be nice if there were a simple way of preventing them from profiting from their theft.

Is pursuing the issue with Google worthwhile? If so, is it worth getting some of the other copyright holders on board?

Or do I just need to accept that on the web people can steal content with impunity as long as they don't mess with big companies?

  • Is pursuing the issue with Google worthwhile?

Yes. I've run across a similar site.. probably the same one. Full of pilfered content from dozens of sites. That makes it no less a target of a DMCA notification.

  • If so, is it worth getting some of the other copyright holders on board?

No. If you have a valid complaint Google will act upon it, regardless of any other copyright holders position. The fact is, they will benefit from your effort. Expect to see a bonus check from all of them at the end of the year.

  • Or do I just need to accept that on the web people can steal content with impunity as long as they don't mess with big companies?

Never. There came a point for me where hunting down stolen content was more trouble that it was worth. I'm not aggressive about hunting it down anymore, but if someone comes to my attention I will take 15 minutes to file and fax a complaint. That's all it takes anymore.

FWIW, I would not even mention AdSense when filing a DMCA complaint with Google. When they review the content in question it will be obvious to them, and they can take whatever other actions may be appropriate.

Yes. It is worth filing a DMCA. Don't worry about the other copyright owners who have been stolen from. Just mention your material.

We all have to do what we can to put down plagiarism.
