Sharing content and avoiding dup content

We want to share an article or two with someone, but want to avoid duplicate content(and of course the possibility the site would outrank us on this key term eventually).

What type of article should we share:
- An article that is already ranking high in Google...since they knew we had it first it shouldn't steal the ranking.
- An article that hasn't been indexed well/yet with Google.

We do want to help this person, but don't want to shoot ourselves in the foot :)

Thanks!

An article that ranks high in your URL cannot be hurt - the inbound links which produce this ranking will not be removed just because the same content will appear elsewhere.

However if the site you are giving your article has a higher pagerank than yours, they may be able to outrank you.
