Frivolous Holidays (U.S.)

A source for them?

I want to do a calendar and include "fun" holidays on it. Things like National Spaghetti Day, National Science Fiction Day, etc.

I've seen a couple sites listing holidays but no one indicates a source. Nor is it clear whether a certain holiday is an annual holiday, or just a one time deal.

Excluding private holidays (e.g., BT declaring December 11th as National WebmasterWorld Day), I am guessing that these holidays are declared by Congress, and that there ought to be a public domain record somewhere of these holidays and whether they are annual or one-time?

Thanks!

I don't know of any one source. Some of them are probably regional, so there may not be any one definitive source.

I would suggest not calling them "holidays" though. To me at least, "holiday" has the connotation of having the day off from work. Personally, I would be more than happy to take off in observance of National SPaghetti Day...

There's always the "Hallmark" holidays -- where would that card company be without something going on each and every day of the year that they wanted to sell a card?

How about for the Festival of Sleep?

Someone doesn't coordinate these days very well. the Festival of Sleep is the day before National Spaghetti Day. One would think the day after National Spaghetti Day would be the Festival of Sleep, instead of National Whipped Cream Day.

BTW, yesterday was National Sausage Pizza Day.

As far as a public record, it'd be in the Congressional Record - but wading through that looking for special days could be a nightmare! I don't know if there's a searchable version of it - could try first.gov and see where it leads.

The way it usually seems to work is that a group contacts a representative of a locality where their particular product/whatever is important, who then makes a speech something along the lines of, "Mr. Speaker, I rise today to remind my colleagues of the importance of grain and tomato products in the American diet [...goes on for about ten minutes...], so to honor both of these pillars of nutrition simultaneously, I propose that October 13, 2006, be recognized as National Spaghetti Day."

...A consideration when voting for a Congressional representative - you want one who can say things like the preceding with a straight face. ;)
