If there is a site with a domain name redwigdgets.com can I register domain red-widgets.com and build a site?

Thanks in advance

Yes.

However if we're talking WidgetsTM, prepare to be accused of cyber-squatting. (EG if you mean coke-max or pepsi-zero)

There are arguments about the wisdom of doing it.

1. If there's confusion, will you gain or lose?
2. You'll never be more than a 'me-too' which may hold you back in the future
3. If it's personal, don't bother

and more ...

Thanks Quadrile.

It was nothing more sinister than my frustration at all combinations of words taken up I'd like to use for my new domain.

I'll get my creative thinking hat on ...

I find the best technique is to get some mates half sozzled then brainstorm.

Come the morning ... OK, the morning after that ... delete the 'funny' ones, delete the unprintable, delete the ones that everyone knows, that got suggested anyway, and think carefully about whatever's left.

Tragically, it doesn't always work ... but hey, who's counting? ;)
