writing articles in word, best method to embed code snippets?

I want to write an article that includes programming code examples within the article.

Are there any 'best practises' in doing this? At the moment I am just creating a .txt file to accompany the word document where I can format the code using <PRE></PRE> so when I publish to the web I can just cut and paste from the word document and then grab the referenced code from my text file.

Are there any easier ways to do this?
