I'm looking for a free-standing application that can work alongside our proprietary CMS that will auto categorize our content and return metadata that will be used for keywords on a given html page. I'm in the process of trying to find vendors that can accomplish this task. Has anybody done any research on the subject? I'm Having a hard time finding the different alternatives. Any help/analysis on the subject would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, stevenj_3. Are you thinking that this script would analyze the content (e.g., keyword density, keyword prominence, etc.) and automatically categorize it and tag it? Or am I missing the point? Any human intervention (e.g., review of the categories/keywords)?

Sounds like you're looking for a rules-based taxonomy system. Wand and Data Harmony come to mind, but they aren't cheap. However, given the amount of work involved creating a rules-based taxonomy system, the prices are realistic depending on the scale of the project.

Are you talking about a hundred megs of content? Or gigs and gigs?
