Framing site

Legal, illegal? How to prevent it?

A regional "directory" - out in the Middle East - has our site framed. I contacted them this week and politely asked that they desist and gave them 48 hours to comply.

A brief reply offered an apology and a promise to desist. However, 48 hours later, no change. Hmm.

A quick trawl through relevant threads in the forum library gave me the notion that framing isn't actually illegal, just annoying. Is this so? Have I understood this correctly?

If so, and this site chooses to ignore my request, what other options are available to me?

There are JavaScripts available that will force your page out of a frame.

Have never used any of them, but a Google search turns up a fair amount of them.

The 'legal' or 'not legal' status depends on what they do, not how they do it. Independent of the technology, if they are presenting your content as if it were their own, then that's clearly a copyright violation, and subject to DMCA site removal in the US-based search engines, and further legal action if you wish to try to pursue it internationally...

As ccDan said, there are lots of frame-buster scripts on the Web. Just make sure to pick one that does not break your 'Back' button, as many of them do. A search on WebmasterWorld will also turn up lots of frame-buster script snippets, as well as some previous discussion of the back button problem.

Thank you - the offending site has now been 'frame-busted'.
