Public Service Content

Incoming searches aren't relevant so you help them out.

When someone coming to my site about widgets is searching for a site about trinkets (via Google, Yahoo!, etc.) I find that they leave rather quickly (obviously). The thing is numerous trinkets make up my widget so trinkets being mentioned is obviously common and a good idea.

So for those errant visitors I made a small section of the widgets page specifically about trinkets and trinkets only. Hence, "Public Service Content". Anyone have any success with this? Does anyone even do this?

I wouldn't really think of this as "public service". Use it to your own benefit.
If they are coming to you for trinkets, but leave once they don't find the information, it's a great idea to make some trinket content.
The longer you keep them on your site, the more likely they will be to either see the connection between trinkets and widgets, or to gain the curiousity (through exposure) to learn more about your widgets.

But then again, if you have absolutely nothing to gain from trinkets, you might want to look at your copy and ask yourself what you are doing to target the "trinket" topic instead of the "widget" topic which the page was originally targetted towards.
If you want to target both keywords, you may want to do so on separate pages to optimize the relevancy of each page to what the searcher was originally looking for.

I'm trying not to be too specific here but the trinkets are essentially widgets minus a trinket or two.

The site describes all the parts needed to make widgets so its not that trinkets aren't being targeted (because they are) it's that people look for a combination of trinkets that aren't part of my widgets. So I'll add the trinkets and create yet another widget on the page.

I call it a public service because people are looking (for a not very well defined group of trinkets) something I didn't intend to put on the page but I did because the page was pulling traffic for it.
