I translated a template that this company offers to promote a widget. Only two months later, without my knowledge, my translated template is fully integrated on their main site, with my translated pictures, but also with extra 'SEO' pages titled with, in this language, quite offensive and spammy keywords.
My own website is now reduced to a word-by-word copy of a part of their main site wich i wrote but will never gain a penny of income on. I have no unique content left besides a language-specific url.
Apart from them not giving me a small indication that they would use my translation, a simple thank you, or a small notifying would have been the least they could do. Now i just feel used and i'm obviously hesitating to translate any more of their templates because i largely would be doing them and all other affiliates more of a favor, than myself.
I have similar partnerships with other merchants for similar widgets and they do not steal my translation. This gives my unique content sites a good SE position for their products in this language.
So i'm wondering, is it normal procedure and their good right to be doing this, knowing that i did use their free template?
The legality depends on what kind of contract or setup you have as an affiliate. Sometimes the small print is a killer, giving them such things as rights to any and all software, graphics, code, etc that an affiliate develops. But nobody ever reads that.
My question: Is the template that you translated a list of facts, or a real article or text?
If so it is a list of facts such as a recipe, I think they can copy anything and not provide credits.
If you translated one of their original articles, then, they still hold a copyright over translations, albeit partly.
