I have a website for a hobby of mine. This site has been neglected over the past year. It is a site with good potential to make money.
It makes money from affiliate links, although over the past year it has made very little. The sites I am affiliated to pay approx 20% of the small charge they take from the customers. Over time this can add up to a lot of money. Other sites I’m affiliated to pay a lump sum of anywhere between $100 - $300.
Anyway, someone I know who has good knowledge of my site’s subject, was talking about setting up a similar site. This person is not a web designer, and knows nothing about SEO, marketing, etc. I believe their skills are in content development. I have been speaking to this person via email about having a role in my site. I've not mentioned anything about payment/terms, as I am not sure what to offer.
One thing I know, is that I’d like to get this person on board to help with producing good quality content for my site. There is a lot of content to produce, and i can't do it all on my own.
However I don’t want to go into a partnership, as the website initially started as a 3 way partnership, and it didn’t work. I can’t really afford to pay this person a salary. This would of course be the ideal situation, but I just can’t afford it at the moment.
So I was thinking about offering them a % of the profits from the affiliates. But the problem with this is how do I work out a rate, and what are the practical implications?
I also might get some other people to write content in the future. Where would this leave me?
Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.
Regards,
Tim
If you search around you'll be able to find content writers who provide relatively good content for very very reasonable charges. You may also want to look into finding university students who are looking to make some money on the side; as long as you pay a fair price, you'll be able to get good content.
